I have often asked this question, and the latest report to come out of Justspace (https://twitter.com/justspace7/status/1655861269683920897 @Justspace7 on Twitter) has prompted me to say it here:
What is the purpose of a ‘Global City’ such as London?
Are they there solely to enable global investors to make a return; to make money?
Are people to be an appendage to money making for international capital?
Are people in a global city expendable?
If it was possible for global investors to make a return from a depopulated, or totally empty, city (they can from individual buildings that have no residents: that have been depopulated) – is this acceptable and should we allow it?
It is well past time that ‘we’ really look at what a Global City really means; and if we are happy for London to be one without question.
