High Quality Development and Cities – the methodology is vital

I am not sure if I was amused or annoyed to hear a spokesman for the Mayor of London explaining how, in the development of mega-sites in London, we are going to get the high quality of Dutch urban design and homes without using any of the methods, systems and techniques which the Dutch use; indeed proudly saying that ‘we’ would do precisely the opposite. This is going to be interesting, but ultimately bloody annoying. But what was definitely annoying was hearing this spokesman saying an hour earlier, to some companions on the tube, that he had no idea what event he was going to speak at, nor what he was going to say – obviously thinking that he knew everyone in the regeneration field by sight and that is was safe to talk so openly. As someone once said, ‘if you have nothing useful to say – perhaps it is best to say nothing’.
