Purfleet, in Essex but part of Thurrock Unitary Council, is set to have over 3,000 new homes and an entire new centre with shops, business units and social facilities as part of the overall masterplan.
I do hope that the new developments are set out in away whch ensures that more than those on the banks of the River Thames get views such as this.
Too often developments hide the River Thames to such an extent that you wouldn’t know the river was there, and a view like this not only shows the river but reminds you how close you are to London (yes, that’s London in the distance).
So, let’s use the opportunity of having a masterplan and being able to control the development (the sites will belong to a single owner) to create a real place that works for people – all of its people.
And creating a place which works for people also has to address economic, social and environmental issues in an integrated and holistic way. I only hope that this happens and a great opportunity isn’t wasted.
