I think it is interesting how a row of shop-front awnings in the old photograph gives the parade of shops a unity, and indeed animatiion, which is missing from the same place today.

Could fitting awnings to a parade a shops be an effective part of a local rejuvenation project?

To me the row of awnings in the old photograph says ‘there is something going on here – come and have a look’.

    … and protect shoppers from the weather. The New Zealand solution here is an attractive one http://www.teara.govt.nz/files/p10209enz.jpg and has a touch of the 1930s about it. I believe Upminster in Essex still has some of these horizontal awnings.
