Public Health: Symptoms and Causes

 Yesterday (30/11/10) the Coalition Government announced via its Health White Paper that Local Authorities will be responsible for improving Public Health, and the news media has been full of experts talking about using high taxes to correct the UK’s tendancy to eat too much of the wrong thing and to drink to excess. But no one is cutting to the core of these issues: ‘Why are so many people drinking to excess and eating the wrong food?’. Without trying to identify and address the underlying issues we are in danger of implementing the wrong intervention programmes and once again tackling the symptoms and not the causes.
